Adjustable Gastric Banding

The adjustable gastric band procedure also known as adjustable gastric banding (AGB) or lap-band surgery, is a weight loss surgery that involves placing an inflatable band around the upper portion of the stomach. This creates a small stomach pouch above the band, while the remaining stomach is below the band.

The band is adjustable and this facilitate surgeon to adjust the size of the stomach opening by injecting sterile saline into the band through a port that is placed under the skin.

The process of reducing the size of the opening in gastric banding is done gradually through repeated adjustments or “fills.” However, recent studies have challenged the notion that the band solely works by restricting the amount of food consumed per meal and slowing down food emptying.
