Weight loss surgery has become increasingly common in recent years, known by various names such as obesity surgery, bariatric surgery, or metabolic surgery. But what exactly is it, and how can it help reach your weight loss objectives?
Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure that involves altering either the stomach or small intestine to control food intake and nutrient absorption. It induces hormonal changes that ease cravings, enhance meal satisfaction, and address the root causes of fat accumulation in the body.
While bariatric surgery is a recognized approach for weight loss, not everyone with severe obesity qualifies for this procedure, and patients who meet the criteria have a high chance of success. Combining bariatric surgery with regular exercise, a balanced diet, and nutritional supplements helps individuals attain and sustain their weight loss goals.
In summary, bariatric surgery significantly reduces excess weight, leading to long-term health benefits and decreased risks associated with obesity.

How Bariatric Surgery Is More Successful
Types of Bariatric Surgery
This is an advanced type of Laparoscopic Surgery in which the entire surgery is carried out through a single entry point the “belly button”. Since the incision is made inside the umbilicus, it results in a scarless surgery. Having the desired skills and being the finest surgical team in Asia to perform this highly challenging technique has earned us the reputation of being – ‘The SILS Experts’.
In this procedure the outer margin of the stomach is removed to limit the amount of food intake, leaving a sleeve of stomach roughly about the size and shape of a banana. The Sleeve Gastrectomy, allows the patient to feel full after eating less and taking in fewer calories. The surgery removes that portion of the stomach that produces a hormone that can makes a patient feel hungry. Food passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, allowing vitamins and nutrients to be fully absorbed into the body. In this procedure a person can lose upto 80% of their excess body weight and also helps to resolve high BP, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Type2 Diabetes in patients.
Gastric bypass, also called Roux-en-Y (roo-en-y) gastric bypass, is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. After gastric bypass, swallowed food will go into this small pouch of stomach and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine. The gastric bypass is considered the most reliable operation for long-lasting weight loss because of its multiple mechanisms. It limits the amount of food that can be eaten at a meal and reduces the desire to eat. Moreover, weight loss is higher than any other weight loss surgery.
A mini gastric bypass surgery functions just like a traditional gastric bypass surgery but in this the stomach is divided into upper and lower pouches and the small intestine is rerouted. This helps promote weight loss by limiting the number of calories one can consume in a single meal.
Duodenal switch is a procedure that induces weight loss by a sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. This approach results in decreased absorption of food. About 70% of the stomach is removed with the help of staplers. Just below the stomach, the intestine is divided or cut preserving the pylorus or valve which controls passage of food from stomach to intestine. A new connection between stomach and intestine is created after bypassing approximately 4/5 th of intestine.
It is a minimally invasive, quick, reversible and adjustable surgical procedure that decreases the size of the stomach to reduce food intake. It involves placing an inflatable band around the top of the stomach, which results in a person feels fuller with less food. The surgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The band limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food.
This procedure is very similar to the standard duodenal switch operation, except that the small intestine is transacted only at one point instead of two. The majority of the most stretchable portion of the stomach is permanently removed, but basic stomach function remains the same. In addition, roughly 4/5 th of the upper small intestine is bypassed, resulting in a moderate decrease in calorie absorption. Weight loss is achieved both through restriction of food consumption and malabsorption.
Gastric Balloon
A gastric balloon is a non-surgical tool to help achieve weight loss. In this procedure, a silicon balloon is inserted into the stomach that creates a feeling of fullness quicker after smaller meals. It reduces your hunger allowing you to control your portion sizes and can be used as a stepping stone on the path to weight loss success. This procedure accompanied by customized diet and adequate physical activity you can weight quickly and keep the weight off long term.
